Lymphedema Clinic

Lymphedema Clinic

Lymphedema is a chronic condition in which lymphatic fluid builds up in the tissues because the lymphatic system is not working properly. This system normally drains excess fluid from the tissues back into the bloodstream; when it fails, fluid accumulates and causes swelling, usually in the arms or legs.

Lymphedema can be primary, caused by congenital malformations of the lymphatic system, or secondary, caused by damage to the lymph vessels or nodes — often after surgery, radiation therapy or infection. Symptoms include swelling, heaviness and tight skin; in advanced cases, the skin can thicken, infections can recur and movement can become limited. Treatment focuses on reducing swelling through physical therapy, compression and, in some cases, surgery. Early, consistent care is key to preventing serious complications.
