Gynecology and Obstetrics

Gynecology and obstetrics diagnose and treat conditions of the female reproductive system — the vagina, uterus, ovaries and breasts — at every stage of life, and care for women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period.

Gynecology is not only for adult women. Girls and teenagers may also need an evaluation, treatment, preventive visit or guidance as they develop.

A gynecology visit is part of preventive care and is recommended at least once a year for women of reproductive age — ideally even before becoming sexually active, the best time to talk about family planning, contraception and preventing sexually transmitted infections.

Likewise, in the field of obstetrics, we find the comprehensive assessment of women in relation to pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period—a phase known as the puerperium.

When to see a gynecologist:

Schedule a check-up every 6 to 12 months, or sooner if something changes. Routine visits help rule out problems and include a Pap test.

For a first visit, the ideal time is after the first menstrual period.
